Church… Activity or Culture?

January 20, 2010 2 comments

Growing up I went to a reasonably stereotypical Southern Baptist church… We had our “contemporary” service early, and in a different room than the “sanctuary”, we had our Wednesday night potluck and business meeting, and everything happened according to plan. We even had the annual youth ski trip, where at least 1 person would end up with a broken bone. It was good, we were happy. We had our group of friends, and knew the schedule… But as I grew older, and more than that when I was living in Lynchburg, going to Liberty U. something in me changed. I grew this need to constantly and fervently be somehow finding ways to worship and be engaged in “church”. I had this idea that “church” was something you did, and that if you wanted to become closer to Christ you had to find ways to do more of it. So I did… I wrote a blog post about “Satisfaction in God” which you can read HERE, but this post I want to do something a little different.  When you read Acts you’ll notice that the early church “did” church but it never became an “activity” to them… It was their culture. They took care of each other, lead each other, stretched each other, and were able to grow and spread rapidly. What if we as Christians stopped looking at what we had to DO for our church and allowed ourselves to become wholly surrendered to God and to living a life of Christ and with him. This is the point at which we break through and church becomes, not an activity, but a culture. What would it take for your church to stop having activities, and start building culture?

Live By God

January 15, 2010 1 comment

When I began putting this post together I didn’t have a whole lot to say. To be quite frank, I still don’t. But I wanted to share with you the verses that I have been reading over and over all week, that have been echoing through my head and my heart and have been probably the biggest encouragement to my current predicament than anything I’ve come across thus far. Before I even give you a glimpse of them however I want you to know that I read practically every english translation that YouVersion had them in…after doing that I chose the translation that I use for my daily reading, the New Living Translation or NLT. Anyway, rather than go on about this or that I’d like you to just read these verses and let them speak to your heart, challenge you and encourage you.

Living by the Spirit’s Power

“15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Who Cares About Your Passion?

December 30, 2009 Leave a comment

Well… We’re 2 days away from the new year… It’s coming quick… I’ve tried over the past few days to let you in on some of the projects that I and the great teams I work with have been thinking through, praying through, and will be releasing and publicly developing. I’ve told you about the amazing opportunity that we all have, to be able to embrace Soul City Church as it launches a unique environment to reach out to the Chicago community and help to affect life change among the millions of people within the walls of the city. But my question now is this… What about you? What will be your cross to carry this year? As I was reading a post by Ben Arment it really got me thinking… The post talked about how very few people are able to actively help people experience their cause… I’ll let you read it for yourself HERE. But the point is…How will you help people to not only see your cause, but experience it themselves, and help them take up their cause and make it known. I challenge you, as we step into this new year, to find your passion, and run head first towards it, don’t just let people see you experiencing it. Help others to experience it themselves. If we all are able to affect the life of just one person this year, think of what a huge difference that will make. If each person we affect reaches someone else, a wave of passion, and generosity, and grace can ripple out through out our culture. This is how we change our world. Not huge benefits, or concerts, or fundraisers, but people helping each other discover and chase after their passion. Your cause is your passion… So what’s your passion?

Christmas Eve

First, I want to take this opportunity to just wish you guys a very Merry Christmas! As I sit here this morning I can’t help but listen to this song and think in wonder, how much God must have loved us. Anyway, give it a listen. I’m sure most of you have heard it before, but this time really listen to the lyrics. Let them soak in, and this Christmas just let the heaviness of the moment come into your soul as you think of all that He has done for us.

Snow, Friends, and Business…

December 21, 2009 1 comment

This has been a ridiculous weekend. Between being snowed in at one friends house, to being snowed out of my house, and ending up at another friends house last night it’s been a trip. But as I sit here back at home tonight it got me thinking… Do you ever feel like you’re kind of floating along, not really settling in exactly where God wants you? Maybe you know you’re being prepared for something, but you’re still trying to figure out exactly where that’s supposed to be… That’s where I am right now. Not in a bad place by any means, and God’s been teaching me more over the past few months than I ever thought possible. I feel, however, as though I’m taking steps every day closer to God’s big plan and reaching my own personal best. So what about you? Are you in your sweet spot? If so, what is it? If not, is there something that’s holding you back from reaching it?

Church Canceled?

December 20, 2009 Leave a comment

Today a lot of the churches in our area, including mine, have canceled their services due to the amount of snow that we’ve gotten over the past 2 days and the complete lack of equipment that our area has to deal with all of it. Therefore I figured today would be a good day to just give you guys some options. I wanted to go ahead and give you a few of the churches that I on a semi-regular basis will log into to enjoy church from my couch. These are all phenomenal churches, and I challenge you to check a couple of them out. They have kicking ministries both online and off. So here we go…

North Point Online

This is one of Andy Stanley’s churches, where you’ll always get some amazing worship tied into a very applicable sermon. Andy connects with his listeners in ways to show them God’s design for their lives. The service on North Point Online starts at 6 p.m. EST

NewSpring Church

I log into this church every chance I get. NewSpring Church is lead by Pastor Perry Nobel. To put it softly Pastor Perry has no problem bringing it home. His church lives to see lives chanced and to help people far from God meet Jesus. Perry also has no problem sucking the air out of the room. His vivacious spirit and awesome preaching will continually challenge your walk, as well as push you to live an all out, head first, life for Christ. Services online here are on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST and 11 a.m. Pacific as well as Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST.

Well, I dare say this is the church that started the online revolution and showed us how real church online could be. I can’t even list all the services they offer, so I challenge you to check them out! They have services going on CONSTANTLY. To check out service times go to . I’m sure you’ll love Craig Groeschel’s awesome application as he brings a solid message and shows God’s love for us.

So there we go, check these guys out! Let people know in the comments if you have other live services going on that we might enjoy! Happy Sunday!

Winter Snow…

December 19, 2009 Leave a comment

So here we are, sitting here watching the snow come down. As we do this I challenge you to enjoy it and just think over the lyrics of this song. It was suggested to me by someone that I can honestly say I have more respect for when it comes to worship music than anyone in the industry. Unfortunately, when Tomlin came through last week Audrey Assad had been taken off the tour due to a bout of mono. Missed getting to hear this song from her but as I sit here today watching the snow come down, I can’t help but think about this song. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! You can thank Matt for getting me hooked. 🙂

Winter Snow by Audrey Assad (with Chris Tomlin)

Could’ve come like a mighty storm
with all the strength of a hurricane
You could’ve come like a forrest fire
with the power of heaven in your flame

But you came like a winter snow
quiet and soft and slow
Falling from the sky in the night
to the earth below

Could’ve swept in like a tidal wave
or an ocean to ravish our hearts
You could have come through like a roaring flood
to wipe away the things we’ve scarred

No, your voice wasn’t in a bush burning
No, your voice wasn’t in a rushing wind
It was still, it was small, it was hidden
